Title: Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation: Techniques and Existing Devices
Investigate and discuss the main principles in three different catheter ablation techniques and
related devices currently used for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF).
You should describe and illustrate, where appropriate,
• The basic pathophysiology of AF.
• General cardiac catheterisation and ablation principles (physics, etc.).
• The concepts of AF “Rate Control” and “Rhythm Control” in AF catheter ablation.
• Briefly describe the following ablation techniques for the treatment of AF:
– Radiofrequency
– Cryoablation
– High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)
• Investigate and briefly describe an existing commercially available device or system for
each of the above named ablation techniques (include figures illustrate). If possible
present a cost comparison for these different devices (some table).
