Dear expert
Question number 1 need about 200 words in separate references
Teacher comments and questions to the previous assignment you wrote for me.
An issue for us to consider during this week of discussion is the importance of existing research to understand what kind of issues have been analysed in the area of study that we aim to develop as this will allow us to identify resources that contribute to the initial understanding of the relevance of the proposed research. The researcher should be able to reflect on his/her research questions and elaborate a detailed critical discussion on existing research that highlights thestrengths and weaknesses in the field as this will be the very starting point to identify the kind of value that the proposed research would be adding. Then, would be possible that we consider offering some comments regarding the leading research question? While reviewing the class work for the first couple of weeks of study it was very clear that not everyone is identifying the leading research question and thinking about subquestions that would help supporting the stated research issue. This tends to be a common trend among junior researchers and it affects the research substantially as it is quite difficult to identify what is the rational of the study. Then, why do you think that a core or leading research question is recommended at the research proposal stage?
Question number2 need about 200 words with separate references
Essay number1 need about 200 words reply to this essay with asking 3 insightful questions
INTRODUCTION
I would view the ‘Grounded theory’ as being applicable to my intended research. According to Easterby-Smith, Thorpe & Jackson (2012), focus in this is to compare a process under different circumstances or scenarios.
I also approach my research from a predominantly Constructionist perspective, particularly with relating to Background, Rationale, Aims & Outputs as illustrated by Easterby-Smith, Thorpe & Jackson (2012, p. 71).
LITERATURE REVIEW
In carrying out my research, I understand from this week’s readings that it is important to review relevant past studies on the same, or similar topics. According to Easterby-Smith, Thorpe & Jackson (2012, p. 105), a literature review comprises the following:
"(1) an overview of the research topic under investigation;
(2) critical judgement;
(3) a supportive assessment of the literature; and
(4) an attempt at an objective process of review (Huff, 2009)."
I understand that an evaluation of the research in terms of progress or success need not depart too far from the same criteria. Key areas of inquiry are regarding any omissions from previous work on the topic, and an assessment of the validity of the applied methodologies.
Easterby-Smith, Thorpe & Jackson (2012, 18) define methodology as "A combination of techniques used to inquire into a specific situation." This definition implies in no way that there is a limit to the number of these techniques, and is open to the possibility that there could be a number of combinations of such techniques. It is important therefore to appreciate the particular drivers leading to the methodologies for a particular academic publication and to avoid being critical for the sake of it.
Further, my understanding from the discussions on methodology by Easterby-Smith, Thorpe & Jackson (2012), is that it comprises the following:
Aims – are these worthy of further pursuit; Starting points – do the authors acknowledge previous work; Designs -. i.e. choices and philosophies; Data types – data was gathered, and which sources were used; Analysis/ interpretation; Outcomes & coherence – is it painting a clear picture and leading to a conclusion?
EXAMPLE METHODOLIGIES vs PROPOSED METHODOLOGY
The chosen academic articles for critique with respect to methodology are as follows:
Agrawal & Ferguson (2007)
I find this article very relevant due to its departure from traditional focus on pricing of consumer products to that of business to business (B2B) professional services. The authors promote the concept of Customised-pricing bid-response models (CPBRMs), those being aimed at establishing the chances of success in bidding scenarios. The biggest driver that I see is the question as to how low a firm should drop its bid price to enhance its chances of winning, with the backdrop that a low price is not a guarantee for such an outcome. Within the CPBRMs there are sufficient controls, including baselining with historical data and the particular characteristics of the work package being competed for, as well as an allowance for information relating to the offerings from the competition. This is seen as being superior to some preceding models, which tended to focus mainly on the bid price. The analyses are in-depth, but due to a significant element of quantitantive/numerical testing, I would consider the CPBRMs to align more closely to a positivist philosophy. However, in my research I adopt more of a Constructionist stance, and from recent experience that factors such as knowledge of, and relationships the Clients are more applicable to the African environment. Further, knowledge of competitors’ is seen to be enhanced by unethical practice, which is not encouraged and may be minimalised. In terms of outcomes, although derived from rigorous analysis, the authors are honest about the limitations in terms of aggressive competitor response.
Owusu-Manu et al. (2012)
Whilst the article purports to be written for the surveying consultancy, I see no disctinction between that and civil engineering in general, therefore consider it fully applicable. Further, their stated methodology is inductionist, and considered suitable for the pricing puzzle, to which no one truth can be assigned. The key concepts are those of price and value, which are both clearly relevant. I find particularly significant the assertion that jurisdiction/location is influential in price determination, which I will examine with respect to Africa. With regards data collection, several contributory factors to the price are shown, however the means of collecting the necessary data for them is not discussed sufficiently. In my analysis however, I intend for the purposes of brevity to isolate factors specific to Africa from standard factors that would be common to any price determination.
CONCLUSIONS
Both the above discussed articles are relevant in their own ways to my research, but neither was written on the basis of Grounded Theory, for which I intend to pursue a geographic (Africa) focus. I therefore see significant potential in advancing the literature on pricing within a competitive environment.
