Human trafficking

Human trafficking

Human trafficking continues to be one of the world’s ethical challenges and dilemma. According to Aronowitz (2009), we currently live in a space where man has subdued and accepted to be controlled by the other. The continued enslavement and trade of humans in this modern age is a degenerating affair that the globe continues to face. Human trafficking, according to Shelley (2010), refers to the act of recruiting and harboring humans through force of false coercion to achieve a hidden purpose or benefit. The most common goals of human trafficking include sexual exploitation, domestic servitude and forced labor. Human trafficking epitomizes the cases of inequalities across the globe with human rights being overlooked, as victims of human trafficking freedom are subjected to coercive subjugation. The continued decry among nations worldwide for redress on the issue continue to fall short.

History of the issue

The advent of the issue of human trafficking can be traced back to the dark age of slavery, where colonialists enslaved millions of people for their gains. The effects of slavery can be seen and felt across the global economy with the uneven development in countries that acted as suppliers of labor. Slavery has been in existence long after the 19th century. With the continued calls to end slavery, the United States abolished the act in a landmark ruling in 1865. Years later, different nations adopted a similar stance on slavery, with most of them repealing the act altogether. For instance, Portugal banned slavery in 1875 and the eventual collapse of chattel slavery.

According to Logan et al. (2009), even though chattel slavery came to an end that did not mean a lot to slavery or the complete elimination of slavery either. Slavery morphed into modern-day slavery, where people were forcefully controlled and forced into labor. From 1945 on, there was a resurgence on the issue of slavery primarily due to the increased human population worldwide. The early and late ’90s marked a new start for the international market with different countries making trading agreements that favored developed and wealthy nations. Trade agreements such as the APEC and NAFTA are remembered to be highly based on an underdeveloped countries labor force that involved slave (Shelley, 2010). Human labor trafficking and the new modern-day form of slavery form a considerable part of our societies even though sex trafficking is also a key factor. Today, even though many people would argue that we have morphed and become better, the issue of human trafficking is still rooted within our societies (Shelley, 2010).

The current situation on human trafficking

With the novel, Covid-19 virus taking a toll on human lives, and the global economy, different illegal and criminal activities continue to evolve and take shape amid various safety precautions like stay-at-home and travel bans. Many activities, including human trafficking, have morphed to fit the current situation. According to Logan et al. (2009), many criminals are seeking different opportunities to exploit and expand their criminal activities. With billions of people affected and about 81 per cent of the labor force locked in at home, human trafficking is flourishing and thriving right under our noses. With the global economy crumbling at every corner, many people fall prey to both labor and sex trafficking (Shelley, 2010).

With healthcare initiatives and regulations being enforced amid the pandemic, many people would hope that the issue of human would be on the decline. Still, instead, the human trafficking industry has ballooned mostly when supply chains from other countries have been stopped. With children left at home and isolated from any authorities, most of them have fallen prey to online human traffickers and predators. According to Todres & Diaz (2010), children predators and offenders have adopted new strategies on how to exploit their idleness and lockdowns to exploit them. There has been an increasing amount of sexual imagery and content on social media.

What is your purpose of studying the issue?

What is being witnessed today is an unprecedented rise in the cases of human trafficking. With the current healthcare crisis, many people are falling prey to the issue with our children not being spared from the shame. There is a need for people to seek redress to the current state of affairs despite the economic situation that we are in. Law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders should pay close attention to what is happening. Multi stakeholders need to craft new solutions to a ravaged society and economy. I chose to study the issue because the lack of political will and critical players in positions of power has led to its continued expansion worldwide. There is a need for governments to realize that every human being has a right to life, and therefore they must safeguard that truth.
