The following is the module explanation as a frame: Module description: Successful research projects of any kind have two components: a good research question, and an appropriate method for answering it. is module is a blend of theoretical lectures and discussions on the epistemology and practice of (mostly qualitative) research as it encounters the digital, and it is the foundation upon which future modules, focused on quantitative research and specific digital tools, will build. The goal of the course is to give students an overview of and some practice in research methods, so that they can evaluate the role that research methods play in the academic literature they read during the course of their studies, as well as choose and apply appropriate methods for future research projects. Module aims To introduce to students the process and tools of research; To introduce the main research approaches in qualitative and quantitative research, with a focus on the former, and how they are applied to the digital domain. (Please let me know if I need to attach to you any of those readings if you cannot find it online) Assignment 2 (50%) | 2,000 words Develop a research question that can be answered using a combination of virtual and content/textual/discourse/image/video analysis, and begin to answer it by carrying out at least four hours of research. This will include choosing your online corpus (text, image(s) or video(s)), developing a coding guidebook, and initial analysis based on it. Write a 2,000 words essay on how you developed your research question, how and why you chose the method you used and website you studied, what challenges you encountered, how you iterated the process, and how you would refine the initial question. INSTRUCTIONS: RESEARCH QUESTION In the first assignment, you were given both research question and method to answer it; in this assignment, you are given a method, and you need to come up with a research question that can be answered using this method and online. VIRTUAL RESEARCH: By “virtual,” we mean that your content has to be found online. Beyond this, however, it is up to you to decide what content and how to analyze it. You can use any kind of textual etc. analysis that we studied, applied to any text, but remember to match the method with the research question, and explain your logic in deciding what to do. As with the previous assignment, the focus is on the process rather than the results. We will look particularly at how you develop your research question, how you match it with which specific textual/content/etc analysis method, and how you iterate and reflect on the challenges you experience. ESSAY: The essay should include a detailed description of the process: – what is your research question, and how you developed it. You don’t need to place it in the literature (in other words: there is no need for a literature review of the topic you propose to explore) – it can just be something you are curious about. You are also welcome to use this assignment as an opportunity to develop a research question that is connected to themes you are exploring in other classes. – what specific method you used to answer your research question including why and how you chose it. – details of your research appropriate to the method(s). For example, how you constructed your corpus, how you developed and tested your codebook, how you iterated your research question, etc. As well as a critical reflection on the process, that considers: – whether the method matched the RQ , if not why, and what would you change. – what worked and what did not, including what challenges you encountered and what strategies you put in place (or wish you had put in place) to overcome them. – how you iterated during the process, and what you would change if you were to continue the research. Your assignment should include references to at least four of the readings from the syllabus. O ne of the readings must be Bryman. Feel free to cite readings from other courses, but not as substitute for the course readings. Citations should be meaningful, that is show us that you have done the readings, understood them, and incorporated them into your research. Note that the focus of the essay is on the process, rather than on the findings themselves. You should report what you found, but be careful to contextualize it well, and to not jump to conclusions. APPENDIX: The essay should also include a one page appendix on the material you gathered for your analysis and on the content of the analysis itself. E.g. a selection of the material you coded (images, text, web pages, video, etc), and your coding criteria/code book. Note that the appendix is required, even though it is unmarked by itself. If you do not attach the appendix, or you do not follow the instructions regarding what should be included and how, or how many pages you should include, we will mark you down for not following the instructions. Appendixes are attached at the end of the essay, after the bibliography. MARKING CRITERIA: – Did the essay follow the prompt? – Were the type of analysis and content chosen for the assignment aligned with the research question? – Was the process described in enough detail? – Did the reflections show a clear awareness of the process, of the challenges, and of mistakes made as well as ways to remedy them? – Did the essay cite appropriate authors in an appropriate manner? …
