What stage of the business cycle is both your home and the target country in?
- The Navy Wounded Warrior Program is a government-funded organization that operates within the United States. Its main function is to provide non-medical care and support services to the nations wounded, ill and injured active-duty population. As one of our strongest allies, the United Kingdom has participated in many of the same conflicts and as a result, their active-duty population has also suffered from being wounded, ill or injured in the performance of their duties. Both countries at the moment share similar economies and are considered developed by world standards. However, the United States has developed their Wounded, Ill and Injured Services at a more robust and rapid pace since its implementation in 2007. In economic terms, the U.S. GDP growth rate is 2.1% while the United Kingdom’s GDP growth rate is .4%. Both economies are going through a period of expansion respectively. Another factor in choosing to assist with the UK’s expansion of wounded, ill and injured services have to do with each countries military spending. This could provide an opportunity to compare the percentage being spent on wounded warrior care services in both countries. Currently, both country’s military expenditures have increased (1).
What stage of the business cycle is your industry in, and your company in?
- Our program is currently in a state of steady expansion due to the increase of serious illnesses and injuries sustained by our military population. However due to the decrease in armed conflicts around the world and a decrease in the amount of combat wounded our program is moving through a period of contraction while we re-define what our mission is and how best to care for our current wounded, ill and injured population. Our fellow services the Army, Air Force, and US Marine Corps also have similar programs with similar missions and are in the process of re-defining what it means to provide wounded warrior care services to an increasing population of ill and injured versus strictly combat wounded. Unfortunately, it is difficult to provide exact data due to government rules and release of information policies.
How can you use this data to understand your company’s prospects in your target country?
- Through continued collaboration and coordination of care services amongst each of the armed services. The data collected could be used to provide the United Kingdom with information on how best to care for their wounded, ill and injured and what specific types of Illnesses and injuries are being enrolled in the programs (2).
What innovations, if any, are present to help your company grow its business?
- The innovations that we encounter in our industry include our ability to access resources to assist with the recovery, treatment, and reintegration of service members back into society. These could include; advances in Traumatic Brain Injury research and treatment, PTSD treatment and counseling, and advances in prosthetics.

The business cycle is the natural rise and fall of economic growth that occurs over time. The cycle is a useful tool for analyzing the economy and can also help you make better financial decisions. The U.S. economy has been in the expansion phase of the business cycle since the last trough in the fourth quarter of 2008. That’s more than 10 years. UK GDP growth is forecast to remain subdued in 2019 as Brexit-related uncertainty and global trade tensions weigh on the economy. The UK has recovered since the financial crisis but growth remains sluggish and has depended on getting more people into work rather than rising productivity. Both economies are going through a period of expansion. The company and country I chose for this project was Amazon in the United Kingdom.

Amazon.com, Inc. is an American multinational technology company based in Seattle that focuses on e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence. Amazon engages in the retail sale of consumer products and subscriptions in North America and internationally. The company operates through three segments: North America, International, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) segments. It is currently in expansion mode and is known for its disruption of well-established industries through technological innovation and mass scale. Amazon is the largest Internet company by revenue in the world. It is the second largest private employer in the United States and becoming a paradigm shifter for the world along with the Big Four tech companies, Google, Apple, and Facebook.
- How can you use this data to understand your company’s prospects in your target country?
Over the past decade, Amazon has transformed itself from an online retailer frontier to a formidably big tech company, providing products and services that far surpass its initial premises. In the UK, Amazon net sales doubled since 2013, and currently the country is Amazon’s second biggest market in Europe after Germany. Amazon operates its supply chain and logistics operations as Amazon UK Services Ltd., with income exceeding 70 million British pounds as of December 2018. The current employee number at Amazon UK Services stands at 22 thousand, which is ten times higher than it was a decade ago.
- What innovations, if any, are present to help your company grow its business?
Across Europe, Amazon and its various services are favored by consumers and only continuing to do grow with innovations. Amazon’s business inventory now encompasses video streaming, spoken audio entertainment, cloud computing, as well as cutting edge Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies. The United Kingdom also happens to be the leading European location where Amazon has the highest number of fulfillment services.
