Essay Question #2. Hesiod names the ambiguous speech of divine figures (such as the Muses, the oracle, Hermes, Aphrodite, etc) as “double speak” and this kind of speech was a common device in early Ancient Greek texts. Explain what ‘double speak’ means and how it relies on ambiguity (for example, how a statement can have multiple meanings rather than just one). Explain how double speak functions in the (1) Delphic oracle of Apollo (2) how Hermes uses ambiguous/deceptive speech in his hymn, and (3) how Aphrodite uses double speak in the Hymn to Aphrodite. Why is double speak associated with metis? What do Hermes and Aphrodite have in common, as deities skilled in this kind of speech? Your response to this question must include two citations from Clay and/or Decker. Your response should demonstrate your understanding of the following texts: (1) Homeric Hymn to Apollo (2) Homeric Hymn to Hermes (3) Clay’s analysis of the Hymns to Apollo and Hermes (4) Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite (5) Decker, “The Most Beautiful Thing on the Black Earth: Sappho’s Alliance with Aphrodite”
