  1. What is phonological awareness? Why do you think the standards in FIGURE 4.1 may contribute to this awareness? Name two activities you can use with children to encourage their phonological awareness according to the opportunities in Figure 4.1 and describe in detail.
  2. Look at the list of multicultural books in FIGURE 4.2. Choose one, read it, and tell how you would incorporate this book with activities involving music, rhyme, and repetition. What activities can you have the children do while the book is being read that will encourage their excitement, interest, and bonding with the characters? Give a detailed explanation and tell why this experience may be valuable to young children of any culture.
  3. Explain why music is often more effective than words for preschool children. How might you use music as suggested for a pickup activity, a transition, or a calming effect?
  4. Describe how you would help children learn a new song. Provide specific examples and include the song. How could this connect to their early literacy?
