Which Functional Groups Are Found on Both Ends of The mRNA Strand Biology Questions

Assignment 7 – Central Dogma

One of the major goals for this semester is that you learn how replication, transcription and translation work – the Central Dogma.  Over the next few weeks we are going to engage and apply your knowledge so that you understand it inside and out.  By the end of the semester, the goal is that you do not need to think about how to do this; it will become second nature.

  1. Below is a single strand of DNA. If this sequence were a template during DNA replication, what would the final double-stranded DNA look like?

5’-GTTCCAGTCCTTGGAAGCTAACGTTGACCTGTGTGCCAATCGGATACATTAAATTGC-3’

  1. In Chapter 2, we discussed seven chemical functional groups that are used repeatedly in biological molecules. Which ones can be found on both ends of the DNA strand that you replicated in #1 above?  Draw or type them in #1 above.

  1. The functional groups that you wrote in #1 above are critical to the function of making the DNA molecule. Why are they so important?

  1. The top strand of DNA (below) is the coding strand for transcription; also known as the non-template strand. What does an mRNA that results from the double-stranded piece of DNA look like?  (There is no promoter or anything else.  Assume the whole strand gets transcribed).  Write the resulting mRNA below the DNA in a 5’ to 3’ direction.

5’-GGATCTTATGTTTTATCACCCCAGACTTCTCTTAAAAACATTATTTAGTATGTAGCCTGCA-3’

3’-CCTAGAATACAAAATAGAGGGGTCTGAAGAGAATTTTTGTAATAAATCATACATCGGACGT-5’

  1. Which functional groups are found on both ends of the mRNA strand that you transcribed in #4 above? Draw or type them in #4 above.
  2. The functional groups that you wrote in #4 above are critical to the function of making the mRNA molecule. Why are they so important?

  1. Type the mRNA from #4 here. Write the correctly translated polypeptide that would result from your transcribed mRNA.

  1. Which functional groups are found on both ends of the protein that you just translated in #7 above? Draw or type them in #7 above.

  1. The functional groups that you wrote in #7 above are critical to the function of making the protein molecule. Why are they so important?
