Week 9-Addressing Multicultural Practice
I’m working on a Psychology question and need guidance to help me study.
Culture influences beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions across all aspects of life, even professional ones. Within your own cultural paradigm and worldview, it can sometimes be difficult to detect how others’ cultures influence their behaviors and beliefs. Consider, for instance, that you are working with a client that has been unemployed for almost a year. The client has stopped actively looking for work. From a cultural perspective, to what degree does the client’s cultural group generally take more of a passive or active role regarding changing their external environment? To what degree might the client feel helpless in the face of past or active discrimination against his or her cultural group? To what degree do the techniques you use in your work with the client coincide with these cultural influences or locate sources of control within the self, as is more common in Western perspectives? Being self-aware of your own cultural paradigm as well as educating yourself on how it may influence your interactions with clients is an ethical imperative in psychological practice.
Within the field of psychology, multiculturalism is an important research topic and area of focus for clinical skills development. There has been much scholarly research examining the application of CBT/REBT with Latinos, members of the LGBTQ community, and with various religious and disability groups. One framework for increasing multicultural competence in CBT/REBT is the ADDRESSING framework (Hays, 2009). It describes 10 areas of consideration within an individual’s cultural identity: age/generation, disability (developmental), disability (acquired), religion and spiritual orientation, ethnic and racial identity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, indigenous heritage, national origin, and gender. There are other frameworks that you may use as well, such as the D’Andrea and Daniels’s RESPECTFUL framework, which includes trauma/threats to wellbeing, family issues, and language, in addition to many of the areas in Hays’s framework.
For this Discussion, you complete the ADDRESSING framework with a volunteer and reflect on insights related to incorporating multicultural awareness and competence into CBT/REBT.
To prepare:
- Consider the statement, “not everyone has a multicultural component in their persona,” before reviewing this week’s Learning Resources. After reviewing the resources, consider whether your opinion has changed or stayed the same.
- Consider the opportunities and challenges to implementing CBT/REBT with diverse populations.
- Complete the ADDRESSING inventory on one volunteer. Choose a friend or acquaintance who is not a member of your family.
With these thoughts in mind:
Write the results of your volunteer’s ADDRESSING inventory. Provide a brief summary of the results of the exercise. Then explain any insights you had from completing the exercise related to implementing CBT/REBT.
Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources. Use proper APA format and citations.
