Author’s Workshop Storytelling Worksheet

As the author of this story, you can write about anything you choose. Your final story can be as short as half a page, but it must be a complete narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. Be sure to intentionally create pace with your sentence structure and include at least five lines of properly punctuated dialogue.

Think Before You Write

Take a few notes to answer each of these questions before you start writing:

  1. What will your story be about?
  2. What type of pace fits this type of story?
  3. How do you create that pace?
  4. What type of dialogue would be appropriate in this situation?

For example:

A story about racing to save the world from an alien invasion would be pretty fast paced. Using short choppy sentences would help build tension and create a feeling of being out of breath. The dialogue in this story would include a lot of yelling and shouting between the characters fighting the invasion. You want the reader to feel the rush as you tell the story.

A story about visiting your grandmother in the hospital would have a slow, somber pace. The sentences would be long and thoughtful. The dialogue would reveal a variety of emotions from fear to care and concern. You want the reader to feel the pain and sorrow of the visit along with your characters.

Write Your StoryAnalyze Your Writing

  1. Now that you have finished your story, go back and highlight the places where you incorporated pacing techniques. Explain in a few sentences how these techniques affected the story.
  2. In a few sentences, explain how you used dialogue to share additional information about your characters and their situation.

What I Think About My Race

I’m stuck on a Sociology question and need an explanation.

Please respond to these questions about you by clicking on the “Reply”” button..It will help us get to know each other better. Some of your beliefs will be based on facts, while others may be incorrect assumptions. The purpose of this activity is to examine these beliefs as a group. You are entitled to your own opinions. However, It is not appropriate to make inflammatory or insensitive comments about other groups of people even if you are just “kidding.”Your classmates and I, your prof., will be able to see these remarks. Please type in your answer or copy and paste it here. No attachments, please.

  • “What four things am I Most Proud of About My Race”
  • “How My Life Would be Different if I was (African American, European American (Caucasian), Hispanic, Muslim American, Asian, Pacific Islander, or Native American)”? (Or other, Choose a culture that is not your own)

a)In education

b)In my neighborhood

c)In my religion

d)In my family life

e)In the justice system

f)Other (you decide)

  • “What role should law enforcement play in racial equality in your community?
  • “What I can do to reduce prejudice and discrimination in the world”
  • One thing I wish everyone would understand when it comes to race in America.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

These questions mean this. Let’s say you chose to say how your life would be different If you were Chinese. In that case. . .

a)In education – (how would your life as a Chinese person be different in education?)

b)In my neighborhood – (how would your life as a Chinese person be different in your neighborhood?)

c)In my religion – (how would your life as a Chinese person be different in your religion?)

d)In my family life – (how would your life as a Chinese person be different in your family life?)

e)In the justice system – (how would your life as a Chinese person be different in the justice system?)

f)Other (you decide) – (how would your life as a Chinese person be different in any other way, you choose the way?)

You do not have to look up how your life would be different, but you may if you feel it would help. In this particular exercise, since the class is just starting, it is okay to give an educated guess. 1 to 3 sentences per item is long enough. You may write more but you are not required to do so.

shanki-data science-week6 activity

I’m stuck on a Computer Science question and need an explanation.

For this week’s activity, this is more of a practical activity than a research paper. There only needs to be a minimum of 2 paragraphs of text and this submission does not need to focus on APA formatting. Please submit the work you completed and the response paragraphs. Here is the prompt:

Choose a topic of interest (movie, celebrity, etc) and collect 100 tweets related to the topic. Hand-tag them as positive, neutral, or negative. Next, split them into 80 tweets as the training set and the remaining 20 as the testing set. Run one or more classifiers over these tweets to perform sentiment analysis.

What are the precision and recall of these classifiers? (this is paragraph 1)

Which classifier performs better than the others? (this is paragraph 2)

Please be sure to also submit the tweets/tagging info within your submission.

Even though we are not going to worry about APA formatting on this activity, the written text must still contain complete sentences. 4-6 sentences make up a full paragraph. Be sure to avoid fragmented sentences and do not use bulleted/numbered lists for the written paragraphs.
