Before answering this week’s discussion prompt, complete The Graduate (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. interactive scenario. You will notice that there are multiple arguments presented to influence your perspective on the issue confronted in the scenario. You confront arguments every day. In our digital age, however, they do not merely happen in face-to-face gatherings. Media and social media are often used to convey arguments. What aspects of what you have learned in this class apply to the analysis of such arguments? Keep these considerations in mind as you complete this week’s discussion.

Your instructor will choose the discussion question and post it as the first post in the discussion forum. The requirements for the discussion this week are a minimum of four posts on four separate days, including responses to at least two classmates. The total combined word count for all of your posts for this discussion, counted together, should be at least 600 words. Answer all the questions in the prompt, and read any resources that are required to complete the discussion properly.

In order to satisfy the posting requirements for the week, complete your initial post by Day 3 (Thursday) and your other posts by Day 7 (Monday). We recommend that you get into the discussion early and spread out your posts over the course of the week. Reply to your classmates and instructor. Attempt to take the conversation further by examining their claims or arguments in more depth or responding to the posts that they make to you. Keep the discussion on target, and analyze things in as much detail as you can.

·         Be sure to check out the Critical Thinking Community online: http://www.criticalthinking.org/pages/content-is-thinking-thinking-is-content/958 (Links to an external site.)Valuable Intellectual Traits: http://www.criticalthinking.org/pages/valuable-intellectual-traits/528 (Links to an external site.)Though it has focused on arguments, this course is not merely designed to give skills and tools for creating arguments; it is designed to create critical thinkers. Critical thinking is not merely a set of tools, but a habit of mind based on carefully reasoning about what is true and how best to live. It is an approach to life basedin careful thought (Vic Le vine, 2012). In other words, it is possible to use the lessons from this course to genuinely live better and smarter lives. This discussion is designed to explore some of the virtues of mind that one can develop as a result of developing the habit of critical thinking. Prepare:  In addition to using the readings and scenarios of this course, take a close look at the web pages associated with the Foundation for Critical Thinking website. Reflect:  Search within the website for the pages associated with the options below, and Reflect how each can help you to live a better life. Choose one of the four topics below and develop the ideas in the page into a plan for implementing it into your life more.Write:  Choose one of the topics below from the Critical Thinking Community website and address the prompts underneath.CULTIVATE Purpose, Point of View, and DecisionsOutline a problem that you currently face or have faced recently. Define the assumptions that you have about this issue. Explain your point of view, and outline the information that you have analyzed in relation to this problem. Finally, explain the implications that have arisen or will arise when you respond to this problem. How caproblem in a healthier and more intelligent manner? (Here is a good example of such an approach: Steven Brookfiend on Critical Thinking [link to video: http://vimeo.com/65688214 (Links to an external site.) ]). Valuable Intellectual Traits     Of the valuable intellectual traits listed in the online readings from this week, identify three of them that you can further strengthen. Explain the traits, and then describe how you will attempt to implement actions in your life that will maximize those intellectual virtues. How can each of them make your life better? Will you be more likely to find truth by developing them?Open-Minded Inquiry Using the online reading “Open-minded Inquiry,” identify what you consider to be the three most important attributes that one must have as he or she approaches problems. Explain why you think these attributes are the three most important, and describe examples from your own life, or from the lives of those you know, in which people failed to display those attributes. How will learning this virtue improve your life and relationships with others? Will it help you to find more truth?

  Guided Response: Respond substantively to at least three of your classmates’ posts in a way that furthers the conversation. For example, you might discuss what you learned from their musings and how you have learned from similar experiences. You might add to the understanding of the points they have raised. You might comment on the value of the intellectual traits they have discussed. You might discuss how these traits can help us to be more successful in our daily lives. You might comment on some aspect of the Chapter or any other resources you have used during this course as they may relate to the discussion. Enjoy.

phd Isaac Newton / greenhouse lab

 I need two lab reports – please follow instructions provided.

Objective:

To have students observe the greenhouse effect and analyze its effect on Earth.

Time:

This lab will take approximately 1 hour.

Materials:

·      2- or 3-liter plastic soda bottles (3 bottles per group)

·      Lamp (100 watt or greater)

·      One-hole stopper that fits in the mouth of the bottle

·      1 sheet of black paper and 1 sheet of white paper

·      Thermometer

·      Ruler or meter stick

·      Tape

Procedure:

1.    Each group should obtain a plastic soda bottle.  Take the stopper and insert it into the mouth of the bottle.

2.    CAREFULLY insert the thermometer into the stopper so that it hangs in the middle of the bottle.  You might want to use petroleum jelly to help get the thermometer through the stopper without breaking it.

3.    Record the initial temperature of the air in the bottle before turning on the lamp.

4.    Position the bottle so that it is 15 cm from the lamp.

5.    Turn the light on and watch the temperature change.  Once the temperature has not changed for approximately 3 minutes, record the final temperature in the data table that follows.

6.    Take the white piece of paper and wrap it around half of the second bottle.  Tape the paper on.  Repeat steps 4 to 6 and record.

7.    Take the black piece of paper and wrap it around half of the third bottle.  Tape the paper on.  Repeat steps 4 to 6 and record.

Data:

Analysis:

1.    How do the bottles represent Earth?

2.    Explain the natural greenhouse effect and why it is important to our planet. How many degrees would earth be different without the Greehouse effect?

3.    Why did the lab have you cover the bottle with white and black paper?  What does this represent?

4.    List all the chemicals that have been linked to climate change, both natural and anthropogenic. Differentiate between GWP of different gases.

5.     How is global warming affecting the environment? What are major impacts on the environment caused by climate change?

Assignment 6: Institutions and Corruption

I’m stuck on a Economics question and need an explanation.

Emerging Giants: The Economic Rise of China and India

Assignment 6: Institutions and Corruption

Due: Thursday, November 21, 4:05 p.m.

In this assignment, you will find and analyze data on a measure of democracy for China and India. You will then determine whether democracy is correlated with development.

Datasets:

Polity IV

http://www.systemicpeace.org/inscrdata.html (website where dataset can be found)

http://www.systemicpeace.org/inscr/p4v2017.xls (data in Excel)

http://www.systemicpeace.org/inscr/p4manualv2017.pdf (codebook in PDF)

World Bank World Development Indicators (GDP per capita)

http://databank.worldbank.org/data/reports.aspx?source=world-development-indicators

Background data collection and analysis:

1. Download democracy data for China, India, and Canada starting in the year of the 1960s corresponding to the last digit of your B00 number. For example, if your B00 number ends in 5, collect data starting in 1965. Find data through the year 2017. Use the series polity2.

2. For China and India (separately), calculate the correlation coefficient between democracy and GDP per capita (use the series GDP per capita (constant 2010 US$)). As each country has developed economically, has it become more democratic?

3. Choose a sample of 20 countries (not China or India), half with 2017 polity2 scores below zero, and half with 2017 polity2 scores above zero. For this sample of 20 countries, calculate the correlation coefficient between democracy (polity2) and GDP per capita (GDP per capita (constant 2010 US$)). Is democracy positively correlated with income per capita?

Essay:

In your essay, describe the level of democracy in China and India and show how it has changed over time. Describe how polity2 is constructed and explain why it is used as a measure of democracy. Compare the two countries to each other and to Canada, and discuss whether GDP per capita is associated with democracy. Kaufmann et al. (1999) show that GDP per capita is highly correlated with measures of governance. Do you also find that GDP per capita is correlated with democracy?

Detailed Instructions:

Your essay must have a title, an introduction, and a conclusion. Make sure to define your terms and provide appropriate background information. A possible essay structure contains five paragraphs:

  • a first paragraph that briefly introduces the argument you will make in the essay;
  • and a fifth, concluding, paragraph that briefly describes the main points you have made in the essay.

a second paragraph describing how democracy has changed over time;

a third paragraph describing how democracy is correlated with per-capita GDP in China and India;

a fourth paragraph describing how democracy is correlated with per-capita in your group of 20 countries;

The maximum length is 500 words plus a two-page data appendix; include a word count at the end of your submission. Include the grading rubric as the first page of your submission. Use Chicago or APA style, and write in 11- or 12-point font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins. Provide a bibliography listing the references you use, including the class PowerPoints if relevant. You must submit a hard copy (in class) and an electronic copy (on Brightspace) by the deadline. Please note that the electronic copy will be submitted to anti-plagiarism software.

Data Appendix:

The data appendix should include enough detail for the grader to determine that you downloaded the correct data and performed the calculations accurately; if not all of your data fits on two pages, you may decide to include only the first and last years of information. Required charts and figures go into the body of your essay; any supplemental charts and figures should be placed in your data appendix.

Penalties:

  • Late submissions: -10 points per day, starting immediately after 4:05 p.m.
  • Over 500 words: -1 point for each additional 50 words (e.g., -1 for 501 words, -2 for 551 words, etc).

If you submit only an electronic copy and no hard copy, you will receive a zero on the assignment.

If you submit only a hard copy and no electronic copy, you will receive a zero on the assignment.

No rubric: -1 point.

No data appendix: -2 points.

Data appendix over two pages: -1 point for each additional page.

No word count: -2 points.

 Each group will receive a different mystery label to examine. The food label you will be working on contains all of the original food’s USDA nutrition facts, but has no information at all about the name of the food or the food’s ingredients. Your mission is to use the food label as your clue to determine the food’s identity. Make sure to use the nutrition information you have learned in this course and the nutrients on the label.

Do not use a search tool to determine what the food is.
