An oxymoron is a phrase that uses two contradictory or opposing terms, while an antithesis is a device that presents two contrasting ideas in a sentence (but not in the same phrase).

An oxymoron is a figure of speech in which two contradictory or opposing ideas appear in the same phrase. It is used to a point more subtly – for humour or for reflection – than by using a direct reference. For example:

An antithesis is a literary device that uses two contrasting or opposing ideas in a sentence to create a contrasting effect. The presence of the two opposing ideas is to bring out a deeper meaning by drawing the attention of the listener/reader and through emphasis. For example:

1. That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
2. United we stand, divided we fall.

Students will consider visual rhetoric through an analysis of a cultural artifact from the community that challenges the status quo. Students should demonstrate an understanding of how the artifact(s) uses rhetoric to persuade its audience. Beyond explaining how, students will determine if the rhetoric involved is effective.  To do so, students will review the artifact’s central idea, audience, design, and textual components, along with evaluating the artifact as it relates to sociocultural and/or socioeconomic factors.

Although a cultural artifact can be just about anything, for the purposes of this assignment, students will focus on an item’s packaging, platform, design, and/or advertising—its visual components.  Some examples are:

• Video game packaging
• iPhone screen
• Magazine cover
• Sneaker advertisement 

Purpose:

Words and images, particularly in this era, inundate us; they are ubiquitous, working to shape our thoughts, emotions, and actions.  To navigate and negotiate this information, students will develop visual literacy, an aptitude to analyze, interpret, and articulate what information has been conveyed through an object so as to better inform their cultural literacy, the ability to understand and participate in a given culture.

Creating an annotated bibliography gives you the chance to explore what kinds of sources are out there relating to a particular topic. (See the attached document for an example of what an annotated bibliography looks like, and what it’s supposed to do.)

Look for any sources you can find relating to your topic. (Your topic should somehow relate to the Mared and Karen case. What information can you research and contribute to our conversation about this case, in order to help us understand the case a little more clearly? The possible perpetrators? The culture of Morgantown in the late 1960s/early 1970s? The treatment of women in Morgantown during this period? Anything else you can contribute to the conversation?)

In your annotated bibliography, you should cite any of the sources that you find, in alphabetical order. (You can cite your sources using either MLA format, or you can use the specific citation format that is used in your major.) After each citation, you should provide a brief summary of the source, as well as why you think that particular source could be useful for your research. You should also provide a brief preface at the beginning of your annotated bibliography that explains the tentative topic that you’re thinking of researching.

First, read the uploaded file published in February 2019, which highlights a number of policy options through which governors and state legislators might address problems related to work in the 21st century.

Next, choose two of these proposals—one from the “Modernize Worker Benefits and Protections” section and one from the “Build a Skilled and Resilient Workforce” section—and describe in a paragraph (one paragraph for each proposal) how they would address a specific problem. Then explore the “Examples” in the gray boxes under the proposals that you’ve chosen, reading the endnotes and following the citations and links. Write two more paragraphs (i.e., one paragraph for each proposal) in which you describe one Example that stands out to you.

You should end up with four paragraphs overall!
