Planning for Communicative or Cognitive Teaching Approaches

Mastering ESL and Bilingual Methods

In this module, you learned about three dominant approaches to second language instruction. Choose either the communicative or cognitive approach to teaching CLD students. Then, using the Umbrella Approach to help you, fill out the template linked below down through the summative assessment block.

Here is the template you should use for this assignment: Modules 5 and 6 Lesson Plan Template

SUPPORT YOUR CHOICES THROUGHOUT EVERY PHASE OF THE LESSON WITH RESEARCH THAT SUPPORTS ITS EFFECTIVENESS.

Recommended Resources: Consider using the following resources to help you outline your teaching and learning strategies and ideas:

  • http://esltechnologyblog.wordpress.com/category/teaching-and-learning-strategies/
  • http://moramodules.com/ALMMethods.htm
  • http://ell.nwresd.org/

Herrera and Murry (2011) also suggest a more visual way to conceptualize the relationship among these four terms : Approach, Method, Strategy, Technique.

Your assignment should be thoughtful and thorough, well-written, and formatted per the  APA Requirements. Upload your completed template to the Week 5 Assignments page.

Remember! You will be implementing this plan in Week 6 and then reflecting on and evaluating the experience for your Module 6 Critical Thinking Assignment.  It is important, then, that you allow yourself enough time during week 6 to teach this new lesson and write the evidence-based reflection discussed in the Module 6 Critical Thinking Assignment. You will need to use student achievement data and/or evidence in this reflection for continuous improvement

What is a proper adjective?

Proper adjectives are words in their proper form (starts with a capital letter) that describe .

Proper adjectives are just like proper . They start with a capitalized letter.

  1. Look for a word capitalized first letter.
  2. Look at the word after it and know if it is a noun.
  3. If it is a noun, then it is a proper adjective.

Examples: I want to write a story with a Shakespearean tragedy . Shakespearean = adjective tragedy = noun

People like China because it promotes the Orwellian culture . Orwellian = adjective culture = noun China is a proper noun, not a proper adjective. China doesn’t describe anything/anyone.

There are also times when the word after it is not a noun. To know if it is a proper adjective, just look for a common adjective and insert the word you have chosen between the c.a. and the noun (remove the remaining words).

Example: The politician gave a great speech but it was very Orwellian . The politician gave a great Orwellian speech .

Instructions: RTI Case Study: LaneyLaney is a student at Rosa Parks Elementary.Every day, Laney receives 45 minutes of intensive, individualized instruction in Tier 2 in addition to 90 minutes of instruction in Tier 1. When Laney first begins Tier 2 intervention, Ms. Jacobs administers a brief reading assessment and determines that Laney has difficulty with decoding. Using this information, Ms. Jacobs begins working with Laney on letter-sound correspondence and sight words. After three weeks of collecting progress monitoring data (six data points — two probes per week for three weeks) from Laney, Ms. Jacobs evaluates these data using a method known as the four-point rule. She examines the relationship between the four most recent data points on Laney’s graph and goal line. She uses these data to determine whether Laney is not making adequate progress. This graph shows Laney’s data point graph and goal line graph. The x-axis is labeled “1 through 6” in one-point intervals. The y-axis is labeled “15 through 40” in five-point intervals. Laney’s data points are in red and are as follows for weeks 1 through 6: 20, 22, 23, 23, 21, and 23. Laney’s goal line stretches from 20 at week 1 to 28 at week 6. Laney’s first three data points are around the goal line, but her last three data points fall below the goal line. When Laney doesn’t respond adequately to Tier 2 intervention, her teacher refers her for a special education evaluation.Laney’s parents indicate that there are no hearing and vision impairments to her continuing struggles with reading. Laney is well-liked by her peers and her teachers are not aware of any environmental or cultural disadvantage, motivation, and situational trauma as potential factors. Based on the information provided, begin the process of drafting a summary of Laney’s current educational performance that could later be incorporated into the Present Level of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP) section of an IEP.Adapted from: The IRIS Center for Training Enhancements. [ELECTRONIC CULTURE]: Film is a unique part of American culture. In class we discussed the transformation of movies from their inception at the turn of the century to their current state. What have been the most transformative and important changes to film as a form of mass media (differentiated from the media as an art form)? In your response, identify some of the most important (as opposed to popular or even good) films throughout history. Given that film is declining as an industry, what do you see as the role of film in mass media as we transition through a digital culture?

technical Writing week 8

  1. In our textbook, read “Chapter 8: Technical Reports” on pages 181 – 232.

  2. Do Exercise 2 on page 232.

    •   As you review examples of the six types of accident reports, keep in mind that the NTSB web site archives both preliminary and final reports. Preliminary reports are often informal (some even handwritten) and lack many of the elements mentioned on pages 209+, while final reports are quite formal and include most, if not all, of the elements mentioned in Chapter 8 (although some elements might have slightly different names).

    •   Format your response as a 750 to 1,000-word memo addressed to me, and include the following topic headings (which are implied by the instructions in Exercise 2):

Purpose – Explain your purpose in writing the memo, and preview the main topics to be addressed in the body of the memo.

Report Elements – Keeping in mind that one or more of the reports you chose might be preliminary, describe the elements of each report you examined. Does each report possess all the elements? If not, what’s missing and why?

Writing Style – Before analyzing the writing style used in the reports, review Chapter 4 and the presentation in Bb titled “How to Write Clearly and Concisely.” In your analysis, refer to specific aspects of writing style, such as sentence length; close proximity of verbs to subjects; use of clear, concise, precise language; limited use of “be” verbs; and use of active voice vs passive voice; elimination of redundancies and double negatives.

Illustrations – Describe the types of illustrations used in the reports. Are some types more common than others?

Accident Descriptions – Explain the extent to which the descriptions of each accident are satisfactory. Are some more detailed than others? Why?

Evidence of Causes – Explain the extent to which the reports provide clear, convincing evidence of what caused the accident (keeping in mind that one or more of the reports you chose might be preliminary).

Recommended Changes – Explain the extent to which the reports make a persuasive case for changes that improve safety?

Conclusion – What is your overall evaluation of the examples you examined?

    •   Be sure your response incorporates all other relevant principles of ethics, readability, document design,

      etc. addressed in previous chapters.

    •   Proofread and edit your work carefully.

  3. Save your response as a MS Word file. Be sure to use the correct file name, e.g., JaneDoeWeek8.docx.

  4. Upload your file by to the Week 8 link in the Assignments & Exams page of Bb by the due date and time.

As I evaluate your assignment, I will ask myself the following questions:

  •   Have you followed the instructions in this assignment sheet, in the assigned textbook exercise, and in the syllabus?

  •   Does your response show clear evidence that you have read and understood the assigned readings?

  •   Does your response conform to the criteria listed in the “Grades” section of the syllabus?

Key performance indicators should represent areas that need improvement. The indicators should be designed to measure performance improvement. Before deciding on a specific performance indicator, current levels should be assessed for the areas of improvement and compared to the standard.

Sample Performance indicators include the following:

  • Percentage of denials by third-party payers
  • Pre-registered patient “no shows”
  • Place of Service (POS) cash collection

Research three performance indicators (clinical or financial) other than the three indicators listed above. Write a 2-3 page paper which explains how the performance indicators you selected have an impact on the revenue cycle.

Your paper should use APA format, including in text citations and a References page.

Submit your completed assignment by following the directions linked below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.
