Econ 4100, Economics, Philosophy and Public Policy, Spring 2017 Purpose of this problem set:

Econ 4100, Economics, Philosophy and Public Policy, Spring 2017

Purpose of this problem set: get yourself familiar with i) the economists’ interpretation of individual welfare and the assumptions embedded there, ii) the Pareto principle and Pareto efficiency, and iii) the normative aspects of market systems (we have not discussed these aspects yet); the main materials related to this problem set are covered in the weeks 3 and 4.

1. In Question 1 of PS 1, you worked the details of the two policies that intended to help individuals in need.  In particular, you presented reasons suggesting that cash transfers are always “at least as good” for their recipients as in-kind transfers, and are sometimes better.

a. Explain how your reasoning and suggestion presented in Question 1 of PS 1 are based on the economist’s interpretation of a consumer’s welfare as preference satisfaction, and the underlying assumptions there.

b. However, government policies often involve in-kind transfers: this is the case for food, housing, education, legal services, health care, and many other goods, and in-kind transfers are often much more popular than cash transfers.  Can you think of possible reasons that the government chooses in-kind rather than cash transfers in such cases?  Make sure that you spell out your assumptions in the process of presenting your answers.

write discussion, and write response about below discussion essay.

Discussion topic

Sociological ImaginationC. Wright Mills’ “The Sociological Imagination” states:

“The Sociological imagination enables us to grasp history and biography and the relationship between the two within society. This is its task and promise. It is by means of the sociological imagination that human beings now hope to grasp what is happening to themselves as minute points of intersection between biography and history within society.”

Using Mills’ definition, how would you apply sociological imagination to your own life? what is the point of intersection between your personal biography and a social/historical event? (8 pts)

Discussion essay.

Using Mills’ definition, I could apply sociological imagination to my life with my fear of not getting into a top university. I find that society will reject me if I am unable to attend a top university and that society has depicted a picture where if you don’t get into a good school, you will struggle financially. The point of intersection with this dilemma can be rooted as far back as I can remember where growing up, the questions always asked were what school do you go to, what are your grades, and where do you want to go to college? That along with the media’s constant mention of only top universities made it seem that if you are to be in anything but the top, you will not be accepted.

The total demand (marginal benefit) curve for visiting Yellowstone National Park is as follows:

The total demand (marginal benefit) curve for visiting Yellowstone National Park is as follows:

Price = 8000 − 3 × Number Of Trips − 2 × Tons Of Visible Trash

(a) Suppose the quantity of trash=250 tons. Draw the demand curve below, being sure to label the axes and the slope and intercept appropriately.

(b) Does the quantity of trash increase or decrease the willingness to pay for an additional trip?

(c) Suppose the park charges an entrance fee of $90. What is the total net benefit to consumers who visit the park (the “consumer surplus”) if this is the only travel costs (all other costs of the trip are zero)? In answering this question, continue to assume that the quantity of trash remains 250 tons.

(d) Now assume the park implements a cleanup program to reduce the trash in the park to 50 tons. Assuming the entrance fee from c) remains the same, what is the new consumer surplus? What was the economic benefit to park visitors from the cleanup program?

A country is described by the Solow model, with a production function of y = k^(1/2). Suppose that k (capital intensity) is equal to 16. The fraction of output invested in 50%. The depreciation rate is 10% and the population growth is zero. Is the country at its steady-state level of output per worker, above the steady state, or below the steady state? Show how you reached your conclusion.

English 1302, Research paper year 1905

I don’t know how to handle this English question and need guidance.

Choose what you consider to be the MOST important event of the year you have. Research that event using at least five sources. The Internet can be one of the sources, but you should also consult journals, newspapers, magazines, almanacs, and other sources which are readily available in our library.

Write a two-paragraph paper in which you focus on this event. Show in your discussion why it is considered to be an extremely important event for your year. This event can be a world-wide event, not just one which took place in the United States, even though it can also be one which did impact our country. Be sure you properly document all information from sources. (You will find that the information you present will be heavily footnoted, since you are learning about the details of this event for several sources.)

Here is a suggested outline for this paper.

  1. Introduction
    1. General statement about events that happened in your year
    2. Specific statement about the important event in the year you have: On January 8, 1790, President George Washington gave the first “State of the Union” address in New York City. This yearly address by the president has continued throughout the years and is anticipated each year.
    3. Thesis Statement: President Washington focused on ways to preserve peace, naturalization rules, the advancement of the education, and the economy of the country.
  1. Development paragraph #1
    1. Topic sentence concerning the event: The President stated that the country should “be prepared for war [which] is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.”
    2. Supporting discussion
    3. Transitional statement leading to next topic.
  2. Developmental paragraph #2
    1. Topic sentence: President Washington emphasized that with the influx of foreigners that “Various considerations also render it expedient, that the terms on which foreigners may be admitted to the rights of Citizens, should be speedily ascertained by a uniform rule of naturalization,” which would later become The Naturalization Acts of 1790 and 1795.
    2. Supporting discussion
    3. Transitional statement leading to next topic.
  3. Developmental paragraph #3
    1. Topic sentence: The president was also concerned about the advancement of the American society in education and economy.
    2. Supporting discussion
    3. Transitional statement to conclusion.
  4. Conclusion: A statement about the importance of this event and also other a hint at the next event to be discussed. Don’t forget to document all information with references.

Again, all information should have appropriate citations and a Works Cited page at the end of the paper.

CS4447 Systems Analysis and Design

I need support with this Computer Science question so I can learn better.

The town of Eden Bay owns and maintains a fleet of vehicles. You are a systems analyst reporting to Dawn, the town’s IT manager.

Background

Please read the case given in the following link. Based on a preliminary investigation, the town has decided to develop a new information system to manage maintenance costs more effectively, instead of outsourcing it to private firms. (The case can be found in the link: EdenBay.pdf)

Now Dawn wants you to perform additional fact-finding to document the specific requirements for the new system. She stressed that user input is absolutely critical at this stage.

Tasks

  1. (30 pts) Review the interview summaries in pdf document. For each person (Marie, Martin, Phil, Alice, and Joe), develop three additional questions: an open-ended question, a closed-ended question, and a range-of-response question for each person. Total 15 question is expected to get full credit.
  2. (30 pts) Based on what you know so far, list the requirements for the new system. You can use your imagination if necessary. Consider outputs, inputs, processes, performance, and controls. Include at least three examples for each category.
  3. (15 pts) You decide to analyze a sample of vehicle records. What sampling methods are available to you? Which one should you use, and why?

Continuing Case: Personal Trainer, Inc.

Personal Trainer, Inc. owns and operates fitness centers in a dozen Midwestern cities. The centers have done well, and the company is planning an international expansion by opening a new “supercenter” in the Toronto area. Personal Trainer’s president, Cassia Umi, hired an IT consultant, Susan Park, to help develop an information system for the new facility. During the project, Susan will work closely with Gray Lewis, who will manage the new operation.

Background

During requirements modeling for the new system, Susan Park met with fitness center managers at several Personal Trainer locations. She conducted a series of interviews, reviewed company records, observed business operations, analyzed the BumbleBee accounting software, and studied a sample of sales and billing transactions. Susan’s objective was to develop a list of system requirements for the proposed system.

Fact-Finding Summary

  • A typical center has 300–500 members, with two membership levels: full and limited. Full members have access to all activities. Limited members are restricted to activities they have selected, but they can participate in other activities by paying a usage fee. All members have charge privileges. Charges for merchandise and services are recorded on a charge slip, which is signed by the member.
  • At the end of each day, cash sales and charges are entered into the BumbleBee account- ing software, which runs on a computer workstation at each location. Daily cash receipts are deposited in a local bank and credited to the corporate Personal Trainer account. The BumbleBee program produces a daily activity report with a listing of all sales transactions.
  • At the end of the month, the local manager uses BumbleBee to transmit an accounts re- ceivable summary to the Personal Trainer headquarters in Chicago, where member state- ments are prepared and mailed. Members mail their payments to the Personal Trainer headquarters, where the payment is applied to the member account.
  • The BumbleBee program stores basic member information, but does not include informa- tion about member preferences, activities, and history.
  • Currently, the BumbleBee program produces one local report (the daily activity report) and three reports that are prepared at the headquarters location: a monthly member sales report, an exception report for inactive members and late payers, and a quarterly profit- and-loss report that shows a breakdown of revenue and costs for each separate activity.During the interviews, Susan received a number of “wish list” comments from managers and staff members. For example, managers want more analytical features so they can spot trends
and launch special promotions and temporary discounts. Managers also want better information about the profitability of specific business activities at their centers, instead of bottom-line totals.Several managers want to offer computerized activity and wellness logs, fitness coaching for seniors, and various social networking options, including e-mail communications, fitness blogs, Facebook, and Twitter posts. Staff members want better ways to handle information about part-time instructors and trainers, and several people suggested using scannable ID cards to capture data.

Tasks

5. (25 pts) Draw a DFD (using the same style in Figure 4-10 at page 113) that shows how data will be stored, processed, and transformed in theTraining Information Management System (TIMS).
