the assumption (that Klosterman makes) that people (basically all people who have and watch TV, which means EVERYONE, at least insofar as those people who live in countries that allow the free viewing (not free as in money, but free as in choice) live their real lives in accordance with the fake lives they see in media, and especially the fake lives in media (TV, film) that we, the viewers, assume can be real, all while knowing they are fake. This paper can discuss these ideas in whatever way you see fit. No rules.

Immigration

This week we sharpen our skills related to analyzing published works, and examining different points of view. The topic for this week’s discussion forum is immigration. Immigration (both legal and illegal) is an ever-growing world issue. Viewpoints on immigration vary greatly. Every day there are plenty of good, hard-working, and otherwise law abiding people attempting to cross American borders. The people are, in most instances, looking for a better way to support their families, to be safe in their communities, and to have better opportunities for themselves and for their children.  In your analysis, explore alternative viewpoints regarding immigration.

Finding our sources

Use EBSCOhost to find the following articles:

Step 1: Analyzing each source

For each article, identify the purpose, or authors’ motives for writing.

Identify the strategies that are used to promote the argument.

Evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies that are used. Were they logical? Did they sway your opinion on the issue?

Step 2: Examining Different Points of View

Write two paragraphs that compare and contrast the articles.

What is the purpose of each article? Are the purposes the same or different?

What similarities did you find among the articles?

  • Be specific by providing examples
  • Be sure to cite your sources

What differences did you find between the articles?

  • Be specific by providing examples
  • Be sure to cite your sources

Step 3: Create a References page

At the end of your discussion post, create a references page:

  • Type the word “References”
  • Enter a line break
  • Provide the full citation (in APA format) for your selected sources.

Case Study – Education

Assignment 2.3: Justification Report – Part 3 (Final)

Due Week 7 and worth 180 points

In Assignments 2.1 (Part 1) and 2.2 (Part 2) of the Justification Report, you built up the major parts of your formal, researched justification report (Problem Statement, Overview of Alternatives, Criteria, Methods, Evaluation of Alternatives, Findings and Analysis, and References). For Part 3 you will begin by inserting your revisions of Parts 1 and 2 based on your instructor’s suggestions. Then, you will include a few new sections. Note: Some sections presented below are out of order so pay attention to where the section should go (for instance, the Transmittal should be the second page of your report based on the provided template). It is essential that you present the final report in the correct section order.

Use the basic outline below to draft your paper. Organize your responses to each question under the following section headings:

  • Preliminary Parts (for Question 1)
  • Introduction (for Question 2)
    • Problem Statement (for Question 2b)
    • Terminology (for Question 2c)
    • Major Sections of the Report (for Question 2d)
    • Scope and Limitations of the Research (for Question 2e)
  • Recommendation (for Question 3)
  • References (for Question 4)

Using the provided template from Week 7, write Part 3 to complete a single-spaced report in which you:

  1. Create the preliminary parts of the report that precede the Introduction (after reading Chapter 11 in the textbook). Each element (1a to 1d) appears on a separate page (1a should be page 1, 1b should be page 2, etc.). The preliminary part includes:
    1. Title Page
    2. Transmittal (stand-alone business letter)
    3. Table of Contents
    4. Executive Summary
  2. Create an introduction that tells what your report is about. The introduction includes:
    1. Begin with a general introduction paragraph that gives the reader any needed background information on the company or problem.
    2. Include the Problem Statement that you already created and revised in Part 1.
    3. Include terms that readers will need to know in order to understand the report.
    4. Briefly summarize the major sections and findings of the report developed in Parts 1 and 2. Note: This is in addition to including the revised sections not instead of including the revised previous sections from Parts 1 and 2.
    5. Discuss what your report will cover and what it will not (including limitations such as research, time, information, or any other factors the reader should consider when reading the report).
  3. Create the Recommendation section of the Report.
    1. Provide a one to two (1-2) sentence recommendation based on what your Evaluation of Alternatives and Findings and Analysis sections have determined is the most feasible alternative (i.e., solution) to the problem in the Problem Statement.
  4. Create the References section, which goes at the end of the Report by pasting in your revised References page.

Note: Remember to organize the report by the section headings. The report should reflect a style and format appropriate for business; single spacing and bullet points are acceptable for formal business reports.

Your assignment must:

  • Be typed, single spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, your name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Support ideas or claims in body paragraphs with clear details, examples, and explanations.
  • Organize ideas logically by using transitional words, phrases, and sentences.
  • Use sentence variety and effective word choice in written communication.
  • Apply writing process strategies to develop formal business reports and / or proposals.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues related to selected topics.
  • Write clearly and concisely using proper writing mechanics.

For this short essay, you have several choices as to the literary approach(es) and text(s) for your analysis. You will need to construct a two (2) pagepaper that fully supports your thesis. The thesis for this essay will vary according to the literary element/movement used, the text under review, and the examinatory purpose. This paper requires quotes from the text(s) under review. Follow MLA documentation for quote integration. Be sure to write two (2) complete pages or there will be a grade reduction. Finally, you must write on a text that we previously covered in the course. This is an assignment that will allow you to examine one of them more closely and in greater detail. Either extend on previous discussion boards or look at a previous course text in a new way.

1) Continuing your work from a previous discussion board, extend on your analysis of a literary element. You may reuse your discussion board post, but it must be revised to fit with the focus and organization of the essay. A copy/paste will not work for the larger structure of the essay. though.

2) Continuing your work from a previous discussion board, extend on your analysis of a literary movement. You may reuse your discussion board post, but I expect that it will be revised to fit with the focus and organization of the essay. A copy/paste will not work for the larger structure of the essay.

3) Using the surface/depth or opposites analytical model, analyze any text we have covered in the course so far. You may focus on one text or compare/contrast texts for this prompt.

4) You don’t like any of the above prompts? Pitch me one! Alternative literary interrogations are always welcomed. You must contact me through email about your essay topic, and I must sign off on itbefore you post to the discussion board. If you do not get my approval for the alternate prompt, you will receive a zero (0) for the assignment.

Essay Guidelines:

  1. Be sure to write a literary introduction, which have a different focus than ENC 1101/1102 essays. A thesis appropriate for literary analysis is also required. A brief conclusion is also required.
  2. Each body paragraph should have a strong topic sentence that outlines the claim or focus of the paragraph, a narrowing to the specific focus/issue of the paragraph, an illustration of the concept from the text (textual evidence/quotes in MLA documentation), and your analysis of how the quote explicates the concept or argument of the paragraph (FCEA). Remember not to rehash the plot excessively! Give only the supporting plot elements that are important (and specific) to your analysis. A good rule of thumb is no more than two sentences of plot summary per body paragraph (not including quotes). Quotes from the text(s) are required for this essay. An essay without textual quotes as evidence for your interpretation will not be graded.
  3. This essay must be uploaded as a .doc/.dox file.
