Response essay

I’m working on a History exercise and need support.

You must write a 2 page response to a document from the Major Problemstextbook, before we have discussed it in class.

The first part of your paper should be a candid response to the document.Did you enjoy this document, did you find it overly long, or difficult to understand? Why did you choose this document to respond to?Did something about it stick out as familiar or surprising? Was there something you found interesting or intriguing?

The second part of the paper should be a textual analysis focused on why the document was created in the way it was. What type of document is it (an article, a speech, a letter, etc)?Who was intended to read it? What did the author want to accomplish or say through the work, and just as importantly- were they successful in their aims? Why or why not? What choices did they make that allowed the work to achieve that aim (or not)?Does your analysis of the document relate to your earlier reaction to the document (is it suitable that you didn’t find a supreme court case to be very exciting, or that a political speech was written in clear accessible language)?Remember to be specific and use examples from the text (with citations) to describe your ideas.

You may choose when to complete these, and which readings to focus on, but this first paper is due 4 December. The papers should contain citations for the information you use and the evidence you provide to support your ideas as well as a bibliographical reference.

Thinking Critically

I’m studying and need help with a English question to help me learn.

Now that we have spent some time thinking about thinking critically, I want you to practice critical thinking.

Television commercials are good examples to use for humanities critical thinking projects. 1. They are ubiquitous, they are all around us and probably the most common example of the arts we encounter regularly. 2. They tell stories. 3. They incorporate elements of the arts — film elements, music, theater, visual design. 4. They are intended to evoke a response. 5. They often incorporate multicultural elements.

Watch the clip below. Think about your response to the mini-film. What is your Dionysian response? Watch it again, with an Apollonian eye. How is the film constructed in such a way to get you to have that response. By the way your response is your response. I am not looking for a particular reaction/response to the subject of the commercial (film) I am looking for your understanding (critical thinking) to the work. You might also want to watch it once with the sound off. What are the visual clues you get?

Write up your thoughts about the mini-film including your first (Dionysian) response and your second (Apollonian) response. How is the film getting you to have that response (I realize we haven’t talked about elements yet, I just want to see what and how you identify elements at this point).

I am looking for a response of no less than 250 words.

Which one of the following is correct about the consumption tax system?

Which one of the following is correct about the consumption tax system?

The consumption tax system provides less incentive for people to work than the current progressive tax system.

Regardless of the percentage of tax charged by the government, the consumption tax system provides more revenue to the government than the current progressive tax system.

The consumption tax system taxes essential goods and services only and thus generates a significant revenue stream for the government.

In the consumption tax system even people that hold illegal jobs pay taxes.

The consumption tax system is more complicated that the current progressive tax system. This increases the need for accountants and IRS workers and thus increases employment in the overall economy.

Assessment 2

PAPER #2     3-5 pages                             Due T, 3-7 at the beginning of class

At this point, you have heard me say a half million times that every word in a poem, every paragraph in a story, every chapter in a novel has a purpose in its whole.  Nothing is there by accident.  If originally an accident, it’s deliberate by the time the work is published.  In the Lake of the Woods is particularly artful in how it is constructed, revealing bit by bit the story.

Take at least one from each of the three types of chapters (titled, evidence and hypothesis) to show how these particular “parts” of those three chapters you have chosen are all tied together through repeated imagery, development of the theme, character development, use of non-fiction in fiction, or, the most complicated, the repeated questioning of truth or reality.  Notice that the assignment asks you to focus on what ties the work together, sort of like the explication you already wrote.  Just as you did with the explication, start with the theme or what the novel says.  Then find at least three pieces of support for that theme.  Once you start, you will find support all over the text.

Post in Blackboard and run through plagiarism checker by class time.  Bring printed copy to class if possible
