Final Paper (16 pts): Due Nov. 29 in class.
The Coursepack readings on Cooperatives (pages 77- 105) present information and some perspectives on the advantages of Cooperative enterprises.
On one hand, the authors suggest Cooperative enterprises are a more efficient alternative because they encourage creativity and innovation more than the standard top-down enterprise where “dependent” employees simply follow orders in “exchange for a guaranteed wage”. Instead, workers in a Coop enterprise have incentive to be more creative, and take a bit more risk to innovate in small or large ways continually.
On the other hand, it’s also suggested that coop enterprises are often more “stable” in periods of economic crisis or downturn (such as the Great Recession). The authors suggest Coop enterprises can provide more stable employment and have greater sustainability during those inevitable swings in the overall economy.
Question: Based on your review of the readings, explain each of these views, and why each may be true. Also, offer your view of which of these two apparent advantages is most important for the economy overall, and why.
