The effectiveness of servant leadership depends on the receptivity of the followers (Northouse, 2016), but the concept has also been characterized as paternalistic and patriarchal (Eicher-Catt, 2005; McCrimmon, 2010). Reynolds (2011) argues, however, that servant leadership provides an opportunity for improved gender integration.
- What roles do gender and ethnicity play in the exercise of servant leadership? Duff (2013) suggested that women are more inclined to practice servant leadership due to their socialization and the emotional and caring emphasis in servant leadership, which could be beneficial to women seeking leadership roles in organizations. Is this a valid argument? Why or why not?
- How might a servant leader’s gender or ethnicity influence the perception of the followers? Would there be a propensity toward acceptance or resistance? Give examples from your own experiences or observations that you feel apply to information/examples given in these sections.
