Background Information

As described in previous workshops, consulting with others and receiving constructive feedback is an integral aspect of the social work profession. This feedback process has been integrated into every workshop in this course. You are encouraged to offer and receive feedback with your classmates as openly as possible, considering areas in which you and others have strengths as well as opportunities for growth.


Instructions

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. In your textbook, Social Work with Groups: Comprehensive Practice and Self-Care, read chapter 1 “Groups: Types and Stages of Development” and chapter 5: “Verbal and Nonverbal Communication.”
  3. Make an initial post that responds to the following prompts by the fourth day of the workshop.
    1. What are your personal strengths in engaging, assessing, and communicating with families and groups?
    2. What are your personal limitations, deficits, needs, and opportunities for growth in engaging, assessing, and communicating with families and groups?
    3. Identify your plans to build on your skills and abilities for engaging, assessing, and communicating with families and groups.
    4. Identify your current interests in working with families and groups, including any social work roles you will pursue and how family or group engagement, assessment, and communication are responsibilities of those professional roles.
  4. By the end of the workshop, read and respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts. Your responses to your classmates should both encourage and respectfully challenge your classmates’ experiences, assumptions, and attitudes toward practice with families and groups. You should also offer any suggestions or resources related to the areas in which your classmates want to learn or grow.
  5. Your posts and responses should also:
    1. Provide clear answers with evidence of critical thinking
    2. Add depth to the discussion by introducing new ideas
    3. Answer classmates’ questions and provide insight to the discussion
