Scenario/Summary

Visa Inc. in the 1990s was a company that specialized in electronic funds transfers throughout the world through their Visa-branded credit cards. The company does not issue cards, extend credit, or set rates and fees for consumers; it only provides financial institutions with Visa-branded payment products that they then use. In early 2000, the company greatly expanded its offerings through the use of debit, prepaid, and cash-access programs to their customers. Within 10 years, Visa held 60% (Nilson report) of the debit card marketplace in the United States processe—over 20 billion transactions a year. This major expansion and branching of their product line has resulted in major issues for management.

The implementation of IT strategies was a major task. The wide variety of technical skills, including IT and banking expertise, along with systems integration with their alliances, and joint venture partners in the industry made a monumental task. The CIO developed policy, explored and evaluated technology, prepared the company for the appropriate technology, and successfully managed the expansion into debit, prepaid, and cash-access programs. This week, you should focus on the chief information officer’s efforts and the supply chain management issues, the role of chief information officer (CIO), and how his role interacted with development efforts within supply chain management (SCM). Focus on the CIO’s responsibilities for this effort in supply chain management, and in particular, the transfer of information and the sharing of information across the supply chain.

Your deliverable this week will be a completed case study (3–5 pages) submitted on Visa Push to the Use of the Debit Card. A sample template for the case study is available in Doc Sharing.

Case Study Steps

STEP 1: Research Issues

In this step, you need to find out the questions “what” and “how” of Visa’s push towards debit and cash cards. Start with some basic research on the company and its market: Research into this company will require you to understand the basic differences between debit and credit transactions as well as how financial transactions are transmitted. Keep in mind that debit cards are connected to a personal bank account while a credit card is connected to the bank or financial institution that issued the card (not Visa). With this difference, how does a cash card work and why is it different than a debit card?

STEP 2: Write the Study

Use the case study template to complete a 3–5 page report on your research.   Include the sections listed below as needed.

Introduction—a brief introduction into the company and its situation

Issue/Problems—identify all the issues or problems faced by the company for the expansion of services

Actions Taken—what was the company’s response on dealing with the issues?

Results—what were the results of the company’s efforts? Did they work? Why or why not?

References—list all research references used

Don’t forget to proof and fact-check your case study. If you are using quotes from sources or data from an unreliable source, you should attempt to find a better source or remove them. This is sometimes called “establishing rigor.” Make sure your case study is credible, transferable, verifiable, and dependable.

Week 3 – Assignment 1

Final Paper Rough Draft

[WLOs: 1, 2, 3] [CLOs: 2, 3, 4]

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, follow the instructions for the Brain Break Activities assignment and go outdoors and do something physical—take a walk, walk your dog, workout, play with your children, sit in a park or your backyard enjoying nature—anything that gets you up and moving. Spend at least 30 minutes exploring, observing, and enjoying physical activities. Keep detailed notes pertaining to how you feel and what you thought about during and after this experience as you will also need them for writing the Brain Break Activities assignment.

Case Study 2:

Select an elementary, high school, or post-secondary school case study from the case studies below. Choose one of Erik’s presenting issues.

  • An early childhood learner has trouble transferring information presented in kindergarten class to long-term memory. Specifically, he cannot recall the letters of the alphabet even though the teacher has the letters posted on the walls around the classroom and quizzes the class daily, has the class singing the A, B, C’s song, and uses books and videos from ABCmouse.com.

Questions for Rough Draft Assignment: Case Study 2

Are there other learning strategies you might suggest for the learner you chose? Then, define working memory and long-term memory. How is working memory similar to and different from long-term memory? Why is this an important concept for educators to understand, given the learner you chose?

While researching and writing the Final Paper Rough Draft assignment, select and listen to one of these brain break interludes in the background:

Review the “Questions for the Rough Draft Assignment” section for your selected case study then research and write a minimum of three pages for your rough draft assignment. Address the case study by evaluating each topic choice and illustrating specific scenarios, processes, or themes. Include an introductory paragraph with thesis statement and concluding paragraph that summarizes the rough draft. Include three resources for the rough draft (one of which may include the course text), and fully APA formatted title and reference pages.

While writing the rough draft assignment, take notes whether the physical activity and the brain break interlude helped or hindered your creativity before and during the writing of your rough draft. These notes will be part of your Brain Break Activities assignment. Use the bullet points below to guide you:

  • Did the physical activity “prep” you for writing the rough draft? Were you refreshed (or not) after completing the physical activity?
  • Was it comforting or distracting to have something on in the background while you were writing and developing your rough draft? Did you find that you could concentrate more or less with the interlude playing in the background?
  • What other thoughts, feelings, and ideas did you have while you were listening to the brain based interlude while writing? What was most or least helpful in writing the rough draft assignment?
  • Thoroughly analyze your internal thoughts, feelings, and ideas while you participated in both the physical exercise and brain-based interlude activities.

The Final Paper Rough Draft assignment

  • Must be a minimum of three double-spaced pages in length (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.). The rough draft must consist of complete sentences.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Running head and page number
    • Title of rough draft assignment
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must use at least three scholarly sources, one of which can be the course text.

Week 3 – Assignment 2

Brain Break Activities

[WLOs: 1, 2, 3] [CLOs: 2, 3, 4]

This week’s two assignments will be conducted a bit differently. You will participate in the brain break activity and interlude experiences (Brain Break Activities assignment) and write your rough draft for the final project (Final Paper Rough Draft assignment) simultaneously. However, each will be uploaded as a separate assignment for Week 3. Please follow these directions explicitly as you will learn more about yourself and your style of learning when you fully participate in this experience. If you have questions, please ask your professor to clarify any questions you have about these assignments.

First, go outdoors and do something physical—take a walk, walk your dog, workout, play with your children, sit in a park or your backyard enjoying nature—anything that gets you up and moving. Spend at least 30 minutes exploring, observing, and enjoying physical activities. Keep detailed notes pertaining to how you feel and what you thought about during and after this experience as you will need them for writing this assignment.

Once you have completed the physical activity, review the criteria for the Final Paper Rough Draft below and begin working on that assignment.

Then, as you research and write the Final Paper Rough Draft assignment, select and listen to one of these brain break interludes in the background:

Finally, while writing the Final Paper Rough Draft assignment, take notes whether the physical activity and the brain break interlude helped or hindered your creativity before and during the writing of your Final Paper Rough Draft.

Write two to three double-spaced pages on your experiences participating in the brain break physical activity and interlude while writing your rough draft. Base this paper on the notes you took during the physical exercise and while listening to the brain break interlude. Be as specific as possible using the bullet points below to write this assignment. Provide a citation for the interlude you chose, and include a fully APA-formatted title page.

Assignment 2

Purpose of Assignment

In Week 2, students will employ the supply and demand model to develop consumer surplus and producer surplus as a measure of welfare and market efficiency. Students learn about welfare economics–the study of how the allocation of resources affects economic well-being–and will discover that under most circumstances, the equilibrium price and quantity is also the one that maximizes welfare. Students will review different sources of externalities and a variety of potential cures and will see that while markets are usually a good way to organize economic activity, governments can sometimes improve market outcomes. Students will see how the U.S. government raises and spends money and the difficulty of making a tax system both efficient and equitable.

Assignment Steps

Scenario: Imagine you have been assigned the responsibility of preparing a paper for the governor’s next economic conference.

Prepare a 1,050-word paper addressing the following:

  • Explain why equilibrium of supply and demand is desirable.
  • Explain the following concepts using the concept of consumer and producer surplus:
    • Efficiency of markets
    • Costs of taxation
    • Benefits of international trade
  • Discuss how externalities may prevent market equilibrium and the various governments policies used to remedy the inefficiencies in markets caused by externalities.
  • Analyze the difference between the efficiency of a tax system and the equity of a tax system as it refers to the costs imposed on taxpayers using the benefits principles.

Cite a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources, not including your textbook.

Format consistent with APA guidelines.
