In addition to writing and speaking well, the professional world demands that you read, understand, and assimilate a wide variety of information. Often we can gain valuable insights by broadening our focus and exploring the many issues that affect our professional activities. Since this is a course in professional communication, it is essential that we pay some attention to the broad ways our culture generates, organizes, and delivers large quantities of information. Each of the book review selections have been chosen to give us some interesting perspectives on those communication dynamics. You will be responsible for reading and reporting on one book. The syllabus lists the titles you have to choose from on the date that book review/report will be due.
The assignment will consist of two parts:
Individually, due Monday (midnight eastern time) before your presentation:
(1) Design and compose a short written report (2-3 pages, single-spaced, memo format) that:
(a) summarizes the book;
(b) discusses the book’s relevance to professional communication;
(c) discusses the book’s central insights; and
(d) provides a recommendation for the book’s use and applications.
